Hey GreenLifeMom - I agree that it seems like greed. Educational publishing is one of the few remaining cash cows of book publishing, in large part due to keeping such absurdly high prices for both the printed books and the eTexts. But I don't foresee a rosy future for these textbook merchants. When the price is high, students will hack the DRM and simply pirate the eText. Likely the price to students for eTexts will drop way down, simply from competition with Creative Commons licensed texts. Back in my day, some students bought their texts (printed books, 'cuz there weren't any eTexts back in the early '70s) and kept them as reference books heading out into their careers. I'll bet few students are doing that any more - because it is so easy to use the Internet to access up-to-date information.
Sure, buying used seems like a good strategy to me. :-)
thanks, cheers,
Bruce

I can't understand how sellers can ask us to pay almost the same price for an ebook as a printed book - it's just plain greed. Come on, there is no cost to print, ship or store, or generate wasteful return books.
As a grad student, I do "HATE" to buy textbook as ebooks - I can't resell it back for any fraction of my original cost. I mean, if I buy a used text, at least I can still sell it and get some money back.

I really enjoyed reading your blog and learning about publishing waste. What can consumer do to prevent this? buy used only?

UPDATE: January 20, 2010.
Amazon has "caved in" on margin given to publishers, as predicted in the above story. But it is not because of Amazon's fear of Google - it is Apple who is poised to be crashing Amazon's party. In a pre-emptive move, Amazon has decided to grant content providers 70% of the retail price! (Content providers are publishers and indie authors doing it themselves.) We will be getting DOUBLE the previous royalty. Yippee! Sometimes the world does unfold as we'd like it to. Here is Amazon's press release:
Press release: http://tinyurl.com/yfuq4b7
Note that there are conditions. The Kindle book must be priced at $9.99 or less - which Amazon apparently wants to set as the public's expectation even for brand new bestsellers. The eBook retail price must be at least 20% below the price of the physical book. And you can't sell the eBook cheaper elsewhere. This doesn't kick in until June 30, 2010
Does the timing of this announcement have anything to do with Apple's imminent announcement of its tablet and terms? You betcha it does.
This is great news for authors! And for publishers!

May 19/09 update... Another service which will compete with Amazon's Kindle store is www.scribd.com. Apparently Scribd, which claims to be already profitable from search advertising revenue, hopes to lure more content providers for its service and offers a hefty 80 per cent of revenue back to creators from works sold on the service. -- BTB
